The Cathedral of Aveiro ( Portuguese Sé Catedral de Aveiro or Igreja de São Domingos ) is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Aveiro in the western Portuguese coastal city of Aveiro .

location

The cathedral, only about 10  m above sea level, is located in the old town of Aveiro, about 75 km south of Porto , about 1 km from the Atlantic Ocean .

history

The church, consecrated in 1464, originally belonged to a Dominican convent ; it was redesigned inside and out in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the dissolution of all religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the convent buildings served as barracks for years; the church became a parish church . The diocese of Aveiro was only founded in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. created.

architecture

The bell tower (torre siniera) is probably the oldest part of the church, but its real gem is its late Baroque facade: The richly decorated portal is framed by a pair of twisted Solomonic columns ; the center of the facade is taken up by a transverse oval window. A total of four turban-like twisted decorative elements can be found on the cubic stone pedestals to the left and right of the central gable with several volutes .

The nave is accompanied by several differently designed side chapels ; Above this, several oval windows illuminate the interior.

Furnishing

In the lower part of the side walls of the church there are figurative azulejo tiles. The church interior itself has two pulpits facing each other and a Baroque altarpiece with a blown gable . In the side chapels, the rich furnishings of the Rosary Chapel (Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário) stand out in particular.
