Life

Daniel de Quervain was born in 1937 as the son of the Bernese historian, musicologist and critic Fritz de Quervain. After compulsory schooling, de Quervain attended the arts and crafts school in Bern from 1953 , where he was introduced to printmaking by Eugen Jordi . He then completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer with Herbert Auchli . From 1958 to 1959 Daniel de Quervain combined his passion for music, literature and theater with his job when, fulfilling his career aspiration, he worked as a set designer for the Bernese cellar theater «Studio 20».

De Quervain's real interest was in the fine arts, which is why he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg in 1959 . Here he attended the painting class of Herman Wilhelm , with whom he maintained contact in the following years. After returning to Bern in 1962, de Quervain initially worked as a commercial artist . He led u. a. Orders for the Swiss Post , the Verkehrshaus Luzern or the SBB . After visiting the Max Ernst exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1963, de Quervain decided to set up as an artist.

From 1963 he worked as a freelance artist. Since 1964 he has mainly created drypoint etchings and lithographs from 1969–1970 , which testify to his interest in expressionist art and literature . Daniel de Quervain presents his works in various solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad such as the II.Biennale Internazionale della Grafica in Florence (1970), the Graphics Biennale in Krakow (1972), the Kunstmuseum Bern (1988) and the Kunstverein Erlangen ( 2004).
