Ayacucho Cathedral

The Cathedral of Ayacucho (also known as the Huamanga Cathedral ) is the most important church in Ayacucho , Peru . The baroque cathedral on Plaza Mayor is the seat of the Archbishop of Ayacucho and dedicated to Mary Snow . It also bears the title of a minor basilica and was declared a historical cultural heritage of the Peruvian nation in 1972 .

history

The construction goes back to a royal decree of June 5, 1612 by Philip III. for the diocese founded in 1609. On November 23, 1632, Bishop Francisco Verdugo Cabrera laid the foundation stone. After a lengthy construction, the church was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Cristobal de Castilla y Zamora on May 19, 1672. It received it in 1960 by Pope John XXIII. awarded the title of a minor basilica .

The procession of the risen Christ begins in front of the cathedral at dawn on Easter Sunday and marks the end of Holy Week.

architecture

The architectural style of the three-aisled cathedral is mestizo, influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque . The facade was built with pink stone in the center and gray stone in the side towers. The central portal of the main facade is flanked by double Corinthian columns resting on pilasters. Next to the main portal there are statues of the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul in niches. The south side is made of natural stone, while the north side is made of brick and lime.

Furnishing

The sobriety of the facade contrasts with the interior decoration in the style of Churriguerism , for example with the richness of the 10 altar panels in gold leaf. They highlight the altarpiece of Our Lady of Socos , the largest in Peru. The main altar is in the Plateresque style , the lid of the tabernacle and the main altar are made of embossed silver. The walls of the main nave are decorated with large canvases.
