The Cathedral of Chelmsford in Chelmsford , Essex , England is the cathedral of the Diocese of Chelmsford of the Anglican Church . Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Peter and Cedd , the diocese of Chelmsford has been a bishopric since 1914. The church, built in the Middle Ages and later expanded several times, is the second smallest Anglican cathedral in England after Derby Cathedral.
The first church building was probably built when the city was built. It has been renewed several times and in its current state goes back to a new building in the 16th century. in 1800 the main nave collapsed and was then rebuilt.
It was not until 1914 that the church was consecrated as the cathedral of the newly formed Diocese of Chelmsford. In 1953 the south entrance was extended. In 1954 the cathedral was consecrated to Saints Peter and Cedd in addition to the patronage of the Virgin Mary . In the course of an extensive renovation in 1983, the interior was given a new floor and new equipment . These include u. a. the bishopric, the baptismal font and several works of art. The windows date from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The cathedral has two organs , both of which were built in 1994 by the organ builder Mander. The main organ on the west gallery is based on the English organ building in the 19th century. The organ case comes from an instrument made by the organ builder Arthur Hill. The instrument has 40 registers on four manuals and a pedal . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric. The instrument can be played from the console of the choir organ.
