The Cathedral of Crotone or the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( Italian Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta ) is a church in Crotone , Calabria, southern Italy . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Crotone-Santa Severina is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and Dionysius Areopagita and has the rank of minor basilica .

history

The cathedral in the city center of Crotone was built in the 12th century, a previous church is said to date from the 9th century. After a fire in the 15th century, it was restored and expanded. After being damaged by the earthquake of 1638, it was restored and refurbished in the 18th century. It withstood the earthquake of 1832 essentially well. During the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, it was redesigned again. The cathedral was given the rank of minor basilica in 1983 by Pope John Paul II .

Building

The three-aisled basilica has a Latin cross plan , with the right arm of the transept longer than the left. The transept and the higher central nave are illuminated by lancet caps cut into the barrel vault and the crossing dome . The nave is divided from the central nave to the side aisles by five large round arches. From the classical facade three majestic portals lead into the three naves . The facade is divided into two floors, the lower floor is structured by four pilasters , the middle of which continues up to the round gable in the form of a tympanum above the second floor. The bell tower rises above the right entrance.

Furnishing

Both side aisles are equipped with altars, they end with the chapel of the Madonna di Capocolonna from the 19th century with a Byzantine icon and the sacrament chapel. The baptismal font from the 13th century and the chapel of Dionysius Areopagita, the second bishop of Athens and martyr, are significant. The painting Return of Jesus from the Temple is by Niccolò Lapiccola.

The pulpit in the central nave was designed by the architect Pietro Paolo Farinelli in 1898; its marble and bronze body is supported by a slender column. The crucifix was made in terracotta.
