The Cathedral of Guadalajara or Cathedral of the Assumption ( Spanish Catedral de Guadalajara or Catedral de la Asunción de María Santísima ) is a Roman Catholic church in Guadalajara , capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara with the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and also has the title of a minor basilica . It is built in the Spanish Renaissance style, the neo-Gothic towers were added later.

history

The first church was built in 1541 as a simple clay church with a thatched roof. With the creation of the diocese in 1548, this church became a cathedral. On May 30, 1574, the church was badly damaged by fire. King Philip II had already commissioned a new building in 1561 , for which Bishop Pedro de Ayala laid the foundation stone in the same year and who was accompanied by master builder Martín Casillas. Due to tight budgets, he made slow progress and the new cathedral was completed in February 1618. In April of the same year, the Holy of Holies was moved from the former church to the new church. However, it was not consecrated until October 12, 1716.

In 1749 the facade was badly damaged by an earthquake. Also in 1818 an earthquake shook the city and caused the towers and the dome to collapse. These were replaced, but destroyed again in 1849 by another earthquake. The new towers with a height of 65 meters were designed by the architect Manuel Gómez Ibarra in a neo-Gothic style. Construction took three years and was completed in 1854. Pope Pius XII awarded the cathedral in 1938 as the fourth in Mexico the title of a minor basilica .

The cathedral was repeatedly a victim of the frequent earthquakes in this region: it was damaged in 1932, 1957, 1979, 1985, 1995 and 2003 and is still in danger. Current threats include a slight tilt of the north tower and structural damage to the dome.

architecture

The three-aisled cathedral occupies an area of 77.8 × 72.75 meters. It is equipped with a large number of altars, which are dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, the Virgin of Guadalupe , Our Lady of Sorrows and the Madonna of Zapopan (patron saint of Guadalajara), among others , to Saint Dominic , Nicholas of Myra , Thomas Aquinas , Christophorus and John of God . The altar is made of marble and silver. The stained glass was imported from Germany. The organ above the entrance is in the French style of the late 19th century and is one of the largest in Mexico.

The cathedral houses relics of Innocent I as well as the tombs of three cardinals and several other former bishops of the diocese and Father Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo , who was murdered at Guadalajara International Airport in 1993.
