Ouagadougou Cathedral

The Cathédrale de l'Immaculée-Conception ( Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception ) is a cathedral in Ouagadougou , the capital of the West African state of Burkina Faso . It was built on the initiative of the French missionary and bishop Joanny Thévenoud (1878–1949) between 1934 and 1936 and is the episcopal church of the Archdiocese of Ouagadougou .

The traditional clay bricks ( Banco ) for the region were chosen as building material . The architectural forms are reminiscent of European Romanesque . The floor plan is that of a three-aisled basilica without a transept. However, this scheme was only implemented on two floors, so that the great length and width of the building correspond to a relatively low height. Together with the unevenly high, seemingly "broken" towers, the building creates the intended impression of still unfinished.

The church building is located in the center of the city in the Quartiers Saints (Secteur 1) district on avenue Bassawarga and avenue de la Cathédrale .
