Port-au-Prince Cathedral
The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de L'Assomption ( Assumption of the Virgin ) was the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince until it was destroyed . The basilica in neo-Romanesque forms was built between 1884 and 1914 and at December 13, 1928 consecrated . The property is located in the center of the city just 650 meters north of the presidential palace .
Due to the severe earthquake on January 12, 2010 , the church collapsed to a large extent. Apart from the roofs of the naves , the two collapsed towers of the portal front one. The then Archbishop of Port-au-Prince Joseph Serge Miot died in this earthquake in the nearby Apostolic Nunciature .
In the chaos and misery that followed the quake, the ruins were looted of all valuables and further destroyed for the purpose of metal extraction. In the following ten years no security or reconstruction measures could be initiated. Only a one and a half ton bell was recovered from the rubble with the help of the MINUSTAH and brought to a safe place.
