Joseph Serge Miot (born November 23, 1946 in Jérémie , Haiti , † January 12, 2010 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti) was Archbishop of Port-au-Prince .

Life

Joseph Serge Miot studied philosophy and theology at the Grand Séminaire Notre-Dame de Turgeau in Port-au-Prince. He received on 4 July 1975 in the Cathedral of Jérémie the priesthood by Bishop Remy Augustin SMM and was first curate in Jérémie. From 1975 he studied philosophy at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome , where he 1982 Dr. phil. received his doctorate . From 1978 to 1994 he was professor of philosophy at the Grand Séminaire Notre-Dame de Turgeau. From 1994 to 1995 he was visiting professor at the Institut Catholique de Paris . From 1996 to 1998 he was rector of the Université Notre Dame d'Haïti .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop and Apostolic Administrator sede plena of the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince in 1997 . The episcopal ordination donated to him on October 12, 1997 Archbishop Christophe Pierre , Apostolic Nuncio in Haiti; Co- consecrators were François Gayot SMM, Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien and Archbishop François-Wolff Ligondé . On March 1, 2008, Joseph Serge Miot succeeded the resigned Ligondé as Archbishop of Port-au-Prince. He was President of the Commission on Evangelism and Mission and the Commission on Peace and Justice of the Episcopal Conference in Haiti. He was a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since 1999 .

Archbishop Serge Miot died at the age of 63 in the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010. He was struck by rubble in his office. The cathedral of Port-au-Prince was also destroyed in the earthquake.

More than 1,000 people attended the archbishop's funeral on January 23, 2010. The dignitaries gathered included President René Préval and the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza . The funeral service was held in a small park. There, next to the coffin of Joseph Serge Miot, stood that of Vicar Charles Benoit, who had also died in the quake.
