Bernardito Cleopas Auza (born June 10, 1959 in Talibon , Bohol , Philippines ) is a Roman Catholic Archbishop and Diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Bernardito Auza studied at the Seminary in Tagbilaran and received on 29 June 1985, the ordination by Daniel Francis Walsh , Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco and later Bishop of Santa Rosa, California . He completed his theological training at the University of Santo Tomas and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He was in the representations in Madagascar and the southern Indian Ocean (1990–93), Bulgaria (1993–96), Albania (1997–98), Vatican State Secretariat in the Department for Relations with Other States (“Foreign Ministry”) (1999 –2006) and at the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations (2006–2008).

On May 8th, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Suacia the apostolic nuncio in Haiti . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB on July 3rd of the same year; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Ivan Dias , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , and Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran , President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue . After the death of Archbishop Joseph Serge Miots , who died in the severe earthquake in Haiti in 2010 , he was Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince until a successor was appointed in early 2011 .

On July 2, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations (UN) in New York. He succeeded Francis Assisi Chullikatt . Two weeks later he was also appointed permanent observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States .

On October 1, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and Andorra .

Auza speaks Tagalog , Italian , English , Spanish and French .
