The Cathedral of Potosí or Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace ( Spanish Catedral basílica de Nuestra Señora de La Paz ) is the central church of the Bolivian city ​​of Potosí . The Roman Catholic cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Potosí and also has the title of a minor basilica ; it is consecrated to Mary as Our Lady of Peace .

history

The previous church from the end of the 16th century collapsed in 1807 during renovation work. The reconstruction took place between 1809 and 1839 by the Franciscan Manuel Sanahuya. The solemn consecration took place on April 4, 1838 under the presidency of Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz , who financed the ceremony.

The church was elevated to the status of cathedral of the newly created Petosí diocese in 1924. As part of the 100th anniversary of its consecration, the cathedral received on October 19, 1938 by Pope Pius XI. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica .

Building

The church was built in a neo-baroque colonial style with a neoclassical influence. The stone facade with bell towers on both sides dominates the Plaza 10 de Noviembre. The single-nave church has a cross-shaped floor plan with a crossing tower due to its transept . The cathedral basilica is listed as a national cultural monument.

Furnishing

Most of the polychromatic altars are additionally decorated with gold leaf. The cathedral houses important relics made of gold and silver. The organ was donated by Simón I. Patiño . In the 2000s, the church's polychrome furnishings were restored.
