The Cathedral of Puno or the Cathedral Basilica of St. Charles Borromeo ( Spanish Catedral Basílica San Carlos Borromeo ) is a Roman Catholic church in Puno in southern Peru. The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Puno and is dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo . It is centrally located on the Plaza de las Armas.

history

The stone church was built as a parish church in the 17th century during the viceroyalty of Peru . The construction time should have been about 80 years. Construction is believed to have started in 1709, but it could also have been in 1669, right after the mining town of Puno was founded. The facade was completed according to a date on the central door in 1757, the completion is dated to 1794 according to a year on the side door. In 1861 the church was elevated to the status of cathedral of the newly created diocese of Puno. In a fire in 1930, important parts of the wooden interior such as the main altar were lost. 1965 awarded Pope Paul VI. the cathedral the additional title of a minor basilica. In 1972 it was declared a national treasure of Peru.

architecture

The church was designed in a mestizo style from Spanish baroque and influences of the Andean culture. The initiator is said to have been the miner Miguel de San Román, the Indian Simon de Asto was responsible. The facade of the cathedral is adorned with intricate stone carvings in the middle part, it is decorated with human figures, native flowers and sirens with charangos , which were carved by locals in hard basalt stone. The massive towers standing outside are only decorated on the upper floor and rise 30 meters high.

A single-nave church with a crossing dome rises on the classic cross-shaped floor plan , the interior design is simple. The height is 15 meters, the width 10 meters. The nave has five bays , the transepts and the raised choir each have a yoke and are straight off. The windows with stitch caps protrude into the barrel vault . The uplifted choir is just finishing

The marble high altar by Emilio Hart Terre houses the images of the Lord of Tranquility and the Virgin of Remedies, while beautiful religious canvases from the School of Cusco are attached to the side walls. The image of Jesus is carried with the processions for rain for a good harvest.
