The Salto Cathedral or Cathedral Basilica of John the Baptist ( Spanish Catedralbasilica San Juan Bautista ) is a Roman Catholic church in the center of the city of Salto in Uruguay . The cathedral , consecrated to John the Baptist , is the seat of the Salto diocese and also has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1886 by the first Bishop of Montevideo, Jacinto Vera , construction began in 1889. The work was then interrupted for a long time until in 1921 the then Bishop of Montevideo, Tomás Gregorio Camacho, decided to continue the work with significant changes. the walls that had already been erected were laid down. The church was built according to plans by the Salesian Ernesto Vespignani. Further construction began in 1926 and the chancel was completed in 1930. Further construction phases, for example with the side chapels, followed until 1962.

In 1939 the church became the seat of the diocese of Salto and thus a cathedral. On May 9, 1988 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral. On April 8, 1997, he also awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica. The church is also classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional .

Building

The architecture is characterized by the eclectic style with the predominance of the baroque . The facade is dominated by the towers standing outside and the high gable. In the north tower there are four bells from France. The rectangular, three-aisled church is 56 meters long and 26 meters wide. Inside there are several paintings by José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín and the life-size, bronze body of Christ by Edmundo Pratti from 1945. The electronic organ in the choir is from 1939.
