The Shrewsbury Cathedral ( Cathedral Church of Our Lady Help of Christians and St. Peter of Alcantara ) in the central England city of Shrewsbury is the Episcopal Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury . It was built from 1853 according to a design drawing by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin († 1852) under the direction of his son Edward Welby Pugin and consecrated in 1856 by Cardinal Wiseman .

History and architecture

The middle town of Shrewsbury became a bishopric when the Catholic hierarchy was restored in England in 1850. The financial strength of the Catholic community, consisting mainly of Irish immigrants, was insufficient for the originally planned representative cathedral with a high tower , despite the Earls of Shrewsbury who played a key role as initiators and donors .

The church in the neo-Gothic style is a three-aisled , five-bay basilica with a recessed, rectangular choir . A roof turret with the bell stands above the portal facade .

Furnishing

Of the numerous tracery windows , the large ones in the portal and altar walls are the most remarkable; the glass pictures, mostly by Margaret Rope , show scenes from salvation history and English martyrs . The high altar has a sandstone reredos rich in figures . In the chancel arch is a crucifixion scene . The walls have been white since the last redesign in 1984 and the edges are colored.

organ

The organ was built in 1975 by the organ builder NP Mander. Two stops from the organ of St. Paul's Cathedral were built into the instrument. The instrument has registers on two manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are electro-pneumatic.
