In 1010 the basilica of Székesfehérvár was completed by King Stephen; this was destroyed during the Turkish wars in 1601. Not far to the south, on a hill, was the first ruler's residence, the palace of Grand Duke Géza , which forms the oldest historical city center. This included the medieval, Gothic Peter and Paul Basilica. The new church was built on its foundations between 1758 and 1768 as the parish church of Székesfehérvár .

The church was built in baroque style based on plans by Martin Grabner . It was financed through donations, including from Empress Maria Theresia . With the establishment of the Székesfehérvár diocese, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1777. Its towers were raised between 1805 and 1815. Pope Pius XI awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica in 1938 .

A double tower facade rises above the portal , on the ledge of which the statues of the three saints Stephan, Ladislaus and Emmerich stand. Both towers wear clocks. The choir with altar and the pulpit were designed by the famous Austrian architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt . The altarpiece depicts Stephen kneeling while handing over the St. Stephen's crown to the Mother of God. The altar was made by Vinzenz Fischer using red marble with Corinthian column capitals. The imposing ceiling frescoes depicting the life of St. Stephan come from Johann Cymbal. The Stations of the Cross are works by the sculptor Barna Búza from the 1950s. In the lower church is the sarcophagus of Béla III. and to see his wife.
