Katherine Neville (around 1397 , † after 1483 ) was an English noblewoman and by marriage Duchess of Norfolk and Baroness Beaumont.

Life

She was the daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland and his wife Joan Beaufort . She was the older sister of Cecily Neville , wife of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York , and Anne Neville , wife of Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham .

Katharina was married four times:

  • On January 12, 1411/12 with John Mowbray (1392 - October 19, 1432), Earl of Norfolk and Nottingham, from 1425 also 2nd Duke of Norfolk
  • 1441/42 with Sir Thomas Strangeways
  • After 1442 with John Beaumont (August 16, 1410 - July 10, 1460), 1st Viscount of Beaumont

She had two children:

  • John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (1415 - November 6, 1461) from his marriage to John Mowbray
  • Johanna Strangways († 1484/85) from her marriage to Sir Thomas Strangways

Katherine's marriages brought the Neville family a growing reputation, as well as money and influence for them personally. It was so valuable politically and financially that around 1465 Queen Elizabeth Woodville arranged a marriage between her brother John, who was just 20 years old, and the three-time widow who was almost 70 years old, in order to expand and stabilize the influence of the Woodvilles in the kingdom.

The exact date of her death is not known. She will last for the coronation of her nephew Richard III. and her great niece Anne Neville mentioned alive. She survived all of her descendants of the Mowbray family , including her great-granddaughter Anne Mowbray, 8th Countess of Norfolk .
