Kathleen M. Fitzpatrick is an American diplomat. She comes from Hyattsville ( Maryland ).

Career

Fitzpatrick received a bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton in 1978 . A Master of Science degree followed at the National War College in 1999. In the meantime she entered the public service, since 1983 she has worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She worked at the consulate in Antwerp ( Belgium ), in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, in the Office of Maghreb Affairs of the Bureau of Near East Affairs and in the Executive Secretariat Operations Center before joining the embassy in Moscow in 1993 as a political officer and in 1995 Brussels in the same role.

In 1999, Fitzpatrick returned to Washington, DC, and became assistant director of the Office of Regional Security and Arms Transfers in the Bureau of Political Military Affairs. In 2001 she was promoted to Director of the Office of Nordic and Baltic Affairs in the Bureau of European Affairs. In 2003 she worked as a political advisor at the embassy in Madrid before returning to the USA in 2007 to become director of the Office of Southern European Affairs.

In 2010 Fitzpatrick became Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor and in 2012 Chief of Staff in the Office of the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights. In 2014 he was appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. On July 25, 2017, Fitzpatrick was named the new United States Ambassador to East Timor by President Donald Trump . The swearing-in took place on December 22, 2017, the accreditation on January 19, 2018.
