Kathleen McGrath

Kathleen Anne McGrath (born June 4, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio , † September 26, 2002 in Bethesda, Maryland ) was an officer in the United States Navy . She was the first woman to command a frigate, the USS Jarrett (FFG-33), from December 1998 to September 2000 .

Life

Kathleen McGrath was the oldest of six children to a US Air Force pilot. After studying environmental science at California State University, Sacramento , from which she graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's degree, she first worked for the United States Forest Service . In 1980 she enlisted in the US Navy and, after completing her officer training, served on various ships from 1983. In 1987 she received a Masters degree in Educational Management from Stanford University . On December 18, 1998, she became commander of the USS Jarrett and commanded the ship during a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf . After her regular replacement, she was transferred to the Joint Advanced Warfighting Unit in Alexandria (Virginia) .

In May 2002 she was promoted to captain, in August 2002 she left the service due to illness. She died of cancer and was buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. She was married and had two adopted children.

She has been awarded the Legion of Merit and four times the Meritorious Service Medal .
