Career

After completing a classical apprenticeship as a photographer, Tillmanns studied visual communication at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences with a focus on photography and interdisciplinary image concepts. From 2008 to 2014 she worked as a research assistant in the teaching and research field of photography and interdisciplinary image concepts at Gerhard Vormwald .

Since 2015 she has been a research assistant at the institute bild.medien in the design department of the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf. Kathrin Tillmanns completed her doctorate in 2016 following her doctoral studies at the Institute for Media and Cultural Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf with a thesis on the media aesthetics of the shadow as a redefinition of the human-technology relationship in the digital age.

Imaging processes are the focus of her artistic and scientific work. Her research interest is determined by technically generated images, such as the context of their creation, effectiveness and reception. Her artistic work focuses initially on photographic images, as well as dealing with the question of their conditions, of viewing and perception, of closeness and distance, of their own special relationality and materiality. Kathrin Tillmanns has been exhibiting regularly as an artist since 2003 and teaches as a lecturer in the design department in the field of interdisciplinary image concepts and digital illustration.

Media aesthetics of the shadow

The research project examines the shadow in certain forms of its aesthetic appearance, such as the peculiarities of its relational conditions and those of its relational structure. The research is based on the artificial presence of the shadow in selected artefacts from the visual and performative arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. The focus is on artistic forms of expression within the fields of photography, video, dance and relational architecture. Here, the shadow is not exclusively in a reference relationship to artistic forms of expression, to and in a certain time, but also in a reference relationship to current media forms of image capture and imaging, as in a special relationship to people themselves. The shadow, in form a drop shadow, in particular the shadow that emanates from a person, is a relational object and the subject of this investigation.

The interaction of photography and text

In 2015/16, students at the Design Faculty of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences conducted extensive research and redesigned ideas under the direction of Irmgard Sonnen and Kathrin Tillmanns . The book Le Grand by Heinrich Heine . The phenomena of standstill and movement, the rapid change in style and language levels, the crossing of genre boundaries, the principle of collage and pairs of opposites were examined using appropriate design elements for typography, layout and imagery. The teaching and research project was exhibited at the Heinrich Heine Institute in 2016/17 . Two further exhibition stations followed in the University of Düsseldorf and in the Doshisha University in Kyoto .
