Out of gratitude to the village where she was nursed to health, she collected donations in Germany for a school building and subsequently traveled to Burkina Faso several times.

In 1995 Katrin Rohde sold her two bookstores in Plön and Preetz and moved to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso , where she initially looked after street children in her house.
