Katzendorf Castle around 1945

history

The village of Katzendorf was first mentioned on April 10, 1432. The inhabitants of the village were strongly oriented and influenced by agriculture . After 1945 they became victims of uranium mining. They became the plaything of the Cold War , because uranium was mined in the strictest of secrecy. At first they didn't know what it was about. Only later did the truth leak through.

The result

The so-called Culmitzsch deposit was the fourth largest uranium deposit exploited by the bismuth . The opencast mine was sunk up to 70 meters below ground level. 90 million cubic meters of rock were moved.

The sedimentation basins were located north and south of the village and posed a great danger to the village and the inhabitants. Together with Culmitzsch, parts of Sorge-Settendorf , Katzendorf, Schmirchau , Lichtenberg and around two thirds of the village area of Gauern had to give way to uranium mining.
