Inscription: HN (Duchy of Nassau) GSIN (municipality of Sinn) boundary stone no. 53

The historic Katzenfurt boundary stones number 49 to 53 near Ehringshausen belong to a boundary marking that was carried out after the reorganization of Europe, which was the result of the Congress of Vienna in what is now Central Hesse . The state border between the Kingdom of Prussia and the Duchy of Nassau ran along the medieval country hedge .

Boundary stone no.53 (later painted over with 26): Inscription: KP (Kingdom of Prussia), KZF EDG with bracket (Katzenfurt / Edingen): The boundary stone marks a special feature of the demarcation: the demarcations of these two Prussian communities meet here at an acute angle

history

The community Katzenfurt (today part of the large community Ehringshausen in the Lahn-Dill district in Central Hesse), which formerly belonged to the "Solmser Land" (County of Solms-Greifenstein , from 1693 County of Solms-Braunfels and from 1742 Principality of Solms-Braunfels), also borders its northern district to that of the community of Sinn , which was "Nassau" from ancient times. Both communities were separated from each other by a state border for centuries. After the Principality of Solms-Braunfels was in 1815 added to the Kingdom of Prussia and had formed at the same time on Nassauischer side, the Duchy of Nassau new, the border between Katzenfurt and meaning attained the status of a national border, which in 1833 by the then Prussian land survey office with Landmarks were provided. Much earlier, probably around 1493, heavy basalt columns were placed along the border between the former counties of Solms-Greifenstein and Nassau-Dillenburg without any inscriptions. They are also still visible today. The border is marked by a medieval border fortification, the landhege on the Hörre , which is still clearly visible today between the Gellenbachmühle and Katzenstein.

Description of the landmarks

The sand-lime bricks with a rounded head attached by the Prussian land surveying department bear the letters “KP” (Kingdom of Prussia) on the Katzenfurt side and below the letters “GKF” or “G KZF” (municipality of Katzenfurt) and on the Sinner side the letters “HN "(Duchy of Nassau) and" GS "(Municipality of Sinn). The boundary stones are numbered from east to west and, as far as they are along the Katzenfurt district, bear the numbers 49 to 53. The counting begins with boundary stone No. 1 at the triangle (Hessen, Solms, Nassau) near the Gellenbachmühle in the border area between Altenkirchen and Bischoffen . At the location of the number 51 there are two stones at a distance of about 10 m from each other with the same lettering. In the past, the old Poststrasse crossed the border between these two stones, coming from the direction of Wetzlar , and from there it descended steeply to Sinn and on to Herborn . Another special feature is the boundary stone no. 53, which in addition to the above-mentioned inscriptions on the Prussian side also bears the letters "EDG" for Edingen . This boundary stone thus also marks the municipal boundary between Katzenfurt and Edingen. In 1866 the Duchy of Nassau was annexed by Prussia, so that from that point on the border lost the status of a state border and only separated the two Prussian districts of Wetzlar and Dillkreis .

This landmark number 50 was damaged by vandalism. The Katzenfurt Association for Local History has set it up again. Inscription only partially recognizable.

Protective and care measures

The Katzenfurter Verein für Heimatgeschichte eV, founded in 2005, has made it one of its main concerns to maintain this border with the historical boundary stones located there. Among other things, in 2005 the boundary stone number 50 was set up again at its original location by members of the association and firmly anchored in the ground.

Today the boundary stones, as witnesses of the former state border, represent a cultural and historical monument of local historical importance.
