The cat tower

The so-called Katzenturm , sometimes also Diebesturm called, stands at the Tower Street in the East Westphalian town of Bad Salzuflen in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

description

The Katzenturm is the last of the three defensive towers that originally belonged to the Salzufler town fortifications and was built in the second half of the 15th century . The round quarry stone building has several loopholes and a conical roof . In 1973 the tower was extensively restored.

The Katzenturm, located at the highest point of the city fortifications, was an important part of the city's medieval early warning system. From the tower there was also a direct line of sight to the so-called blunt tower in front of the city . With the help of light and smoke signals, the city could be warned of approaching enemies at an early stage.

Surname

The name of the tower can be traced back to the Middle High German word "Katte", which means something like jump . At times the tower was also called the “thief tower” because crooks and thieves had to serve their sentences in a holding cell in the lower area of the tower.
