education

The training content corresponds to the activities described in the job description. Apart from the legal provisions, there are no major differences between Germany and Austria.

Germany

Since August 2, 2006, the profession of real estate agent has replaced the previous training profession in the real estate and housing industry . The training lasts three years and is regulated in Germany according to the Vocational Training Act. It takes place in the so-called dual system at training companies and in vocational schools and ends with the final examination . There are 16 suitable vocational schools in Germany for theoretical training.

Austria

Real estate agents in Austria also complete a three-year apprenticeship in the form of dual training and finish with the final apprenticeship examination. This examination also qualifies as the completion of an apprenticeship as an office clerk and administrative assistant . Related apprenticeships, such as accountants or insurance clerks and many other office and administrative jobs, can be completed with a shorter apprenticeship period.

Passing the final apprenticeship examination in Austria also enables access to the vocational school-leaving certificate (Berufsreifeprüfung) and subsequently to further higher qualifications at colleges, technical colleges and universities. If the qualification test is passed, the real estate agent can also work independently in the area of the regulated trade of real estate trustees (real estate agents, property managers, property developers) .

Distance learning training

The school-based part of the training can also be completed in correspondence courses. As a rule, the IHK only allows people to take the final exams who, in parallel to participating in distance learning courses, have also gained practical experience in the housing and real estate industry, in house and residential property management, brokerage agencies or comparable areas. This makes distance learning especially an opportunity for lateral entrants and unskilled workers in the above-mentioned fields of work to equip themselves with a professional qualification parallel to their professional activity.
