The Vytautas Magnus University (literally: Vytautas the Great University from the Lithuanian: Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas ; Latin : Universitas Vytauti Magni ) is a university in Kaunas , Lithuania .

history

The VDU was founded in 1922 as the "University of Lithuania" ( Lietuvos universitetas ) after Vilnius had been occupied by Polish troops and Kaunas was now the capital of Lithuania . At that time, Lithuania had no de facto university. In 1930 the university was given the name of Grand Duke " Vytautas the Great ". After Lithuania was annexed to the Soviet Union , Vilnius became an academic center again and the “bourgeois” VDU was gradually smashed. In 1950, the Kaunas Institute for Polytechnic and the Kaunas Medical Academy were built from the remains .

The VDU was re-established in 1989. After regaining national independence, independent universities emerged from the Institute for Polytechnics and the Medical Academy: the Technical University of Kaunas (KTU) and the Medical University of Kaunas (KMU).

The Agricultural Academy in Kaunas and Educational Academy in Vilnius (two former universities) have been in existence since January 2019 .
