Kawaguchi began painting watercolors when he was 15. From 1909 he attended the teachers' college in Wakayama and continued to paint. From 1911 he dealt with the guidance of Saitō Yori (斉 藤 与 里, 1885-1959) and others with oil painting. Then he went to Tōkyō for further training and finally gave up teacher training. In 1914 he joined the resurrected Nihon Bijutsuin and continued his education under Kosugi Hōan . That was the time when he took the stage name "Kigai", something like "Out of Track".

Kawaguchi went to France in 1919, where he visited Vlaminck and Renoir , and also traveled to Italy and Spain. After a stay in Japan in 1923, he was back in Paris in 1924, where he made contact with Saeki Yūzō , Maeta Kanji , Satomi Shōzō ( 里 見 勝 蔵 ; 1895-1981) and other Japanese. But in contrast to them, he was based on André Lhote , Fernand Léger and Marc Chagall .

In 1929 Kawaguchi returned to Japan and exhibited pictures as part of the artist group Nika-kai ( 二 科 会 ), of which he became a member the following year. But he soon left and participated, together with Fukuzawa Ichirō , Migishi Kōtarō and others, in the establishment of the "Independent Society for Art" ( 独立 美術 協会 , Dokuritsu bijutsu kyōkai ). That was the time when Kawaguchi dealt with subjects like girls, shells, birds, flowers and fruits.

In 1943 Kawaguchi left the Independent Art Society and after the war he joined the Kokugakai ( 国画 会 ) in 1947 . In 1953 he exhibited at the São Paulo Biennale . He turned to abstract painting, changed his first name in 1956 to “Kigai” (軌 崖), something like “cliff track”.

In 2012, the Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama (English for 和 歌 山 県 立 近代 美術館 , Wakayama-kenritsu kindai bijutsukan , "Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art") held a commemorative exhibition on the occasion of Kawaguchi's 120th birthday.
