Kayhan Kalhor

Kayhan Kalhor (* 1963 in Tehran ) is an Iranian Kamantche player and composer of Kurdish descent.

Kalhor began his musical education at the age of seven, performed with the Iranian National Radio and Television Orchestra from the age of thirteen, and then worked with the Shayda Ensemble at the Chavosh Cultural Center . Trained in classical Persian music ( Radif ), he studied traditional music while traveling in the provinces of Khorasan and Kordestān .

He was one of the founders of the ensembles Dastan and Ghazal: Persian & Indian Improvisation and Masters of Persian Music , composed for singers such as Mohammad-Resa Schadscharian and Shahram Nazeri and performed with well-known Iranian instrumentalists. Internationally he performed a. a. with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchester National de Lyon and is a member of Yo-Yo Mas Silkroad Ensemble . He founded the Dastan Ensemble in New York in 1991, and in 1997 he founded the Ghazal group together with Shujaat Husain Khan .

In 2004 he appeared at the invitation of the composer John Adams as part of his Carnegie Hall 's Perspectives at Zankel Hall ; in the same year he was a participant in the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center . In Francis Ford Coppola's film Youth without Youth , he was the soloist of the film music composed by Osvaldo Golijov .

In 2017 the Silkroad Ensemble was awarded a Grammy .

In August 2018 he received the Isaac Stern Award.

He has lived in the USA since 1992.
