Kazimierz Florian Czartoryski (* 1620 in Klewan ; † May 15, 1674 in Warsaw ) was Bishop of Posen from 1650 , from 1655 also Bishop of Włocławek (Leslau) and from 1673 also Archbishop of Gniezno and thus Primate Poloniae .

Life

Kazimierz Florian was born as the son of Mikołaj Jerzy Czartoryski and Isabella Kordecka and thus belonged to the noble family of Czartoryski . After entering the clergy at an early stage, he studied theology in Rome . At times he worked afterwards as a secretary for King Władysław IV. Wasa .

In 1650 he was elected Bishop of Poznan. Since that time he has also been a senator. As such, he also played an important political role. As bishop in 1651 he laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the Poznan Cathedral . In 1655 he also became Bishop of Włocławek. During the Swedish invasion ( Potop ) as part of the Second Northern War, he evaded to Silesia with King John II Casimir until 1657 . He appealed to the nobility in 1663/64 before the threat of civil war. He linked national-Polish and denominational-Catholic arguments with one another. In 1669 he published a mandate for the conduct of witch trials. It strongly criticizes the conditions in many of these processes. The aim was to push back the secular courts in favor of church institutions.

Since November 1673 he was Archbishop of Gniezno and thus Primate Poloniae. He was de jure Interrex after the death of King Michael became known in November 1673 , but had to contend with health problems. The office was therefore actually carried out by the Bishop of Krakow. Czartoryski wrote a letter to the nobility calling on them to make a quick election.
