Kazimierz Gierżod

Kazimierz Gierżod (born May 6, 1936 in Warsaw ; † April 1, 2018 ) was a Polish pianist and music teacher .

Life

Gierżod had private piano lessons from 1949 with Hanna Lachertowa and then continued from 1950 to 1956 with her and with Małgorzata Trombini-Kazuro at the Higher State Music School (today Fryderyk Chopin University for Music ) in Warsaw. In 1973 he completed his training at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena with Guido Agosti .

In 1964 he won first prize at the Festival of Young Musicians in Gdansk . He then began his international career as a pianist with performances in numerous cities in Europe, in Australia, Japan, China, the United States, Canada, South America, Cyprus and Kuwait, as well as participating in international music festivals. On radio and television he gave premieres of compositions by Mieczysław Karłowicz , Ludomir Różycki and Grzegorz Fitelberg , and he made records with works by contemporary Polish composers as well as Frédéric Chopin .

From 1979 Gierżod taught at the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy (today Fryderyk Chopin University of Music). From 1985 to 1987 he was dean of the faculty for piano, harpsichord and organ and from 1987 to 1994 rector of the university. From 1999 he held a professorship for piano at the University of Warsaw . He also led piano classes at the music academies in Łódź and Warsaw, received a visiting professorship at the University of Osaka in 1988 and gave master classes around the world.

Gierżod was u. a. Member of the Polish Musicians' Association (SPAM), the Fryderyk Chopin Society and the Warsaw Music Society. For his work he has received several prizes from the Polish Ministry of Culture (1968, 1975, 1979, 1983, 1993), the Knight's Cross and the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1988 and 2002, respectively) and the gold medal of the President of the Republic of Poland (2010).
