Kazys Jaunutis Bobelis (born March 4, 1923 in Kaunas , † September 30, 2013 in Chicago ) was a Lithuanian surgeon and politician .

Life

His father Jurgis Bobelis (1885-1954) was a colonel and during the Holocaust in Kaunas in 1941 city commander.

Kazys Bobelis graduated from the Jonas Jablonskis elementary school and the “Aušros” junior high school in Kaunas . He studied medicine at the Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas and the universities of Graz and Tübingen . In 1948 he received his doctorate “summa cum laude” from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . In 1949 he came to the USA, lived there in Chicago and specialized as a surgeon.

From 1962 to 1972 he was Professor of Clinical Surgery at Loyola University Chicago . From 1978 to 1991 he was a private doctor.

He returned to Lithuania in 1992 . He operated at the Municipal University Hospital in Antakalnis . From 1992 to June 1, 2006 he was a member of the Seimas ; he stepped back. In 2000 and 2004 he was the oldest member ( age president ) there and therefore chaired the first Seimas meetings. In 2006 he changed the faction from Valstiečiai liaudininkai to the opposition Liberalai demokratai faction . In 1997 he ran for president.

From 1996 to 2000 he was President of Lietuvos beisbolo asociacija .

He was a member of the Krikščionių Demokratieų sąjunga from 1991 to 2001 and then chairman of the Lietuvos krikščionių Demokratieų partija .

He was married. With his wife Dalia he had the daughters Aldona, Alena, Rūta and the sons Algis and Jonas.
