The kegelchen (Euconulidae) are a worm - Family from the subordination of terrestrial snails (gastropod).

features

The right-hand winding cases are usually high or flattened conical and small to medium in size. Usually they are smaller than 4 mm. They have 3 to about 7 turns. The last turn can often develop a keel as well. The edge of the mouth is usually straight and simple. The navel is narrow to closed.

The shell is thin and fragile. The surface is usually smooth and shiny. The underside often shows a clear spiral stripe.

In the male tract of the reproductive system, the spermatic duct penetrates the apical part of the epiphallus, which is separated from the penis by a simple constriction. In some species, a small blind sac attaches to the penis. The penile retractor muscle attaches to the epiphallus (just before the transition to the penis) or to the apical part of the penis. The sperm library is often very small or may even be absent. Some species also have stimulators or love arrows.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The spread of the family is worldwide. There are three species native to Germany.

The animals are found in damp forests, swamps and the edge areas of bodies of water. They live on rotting parts of plants.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1928 by Horace Burrington Baker . The family of the cones (Euconulidae) are a family of the superfamily Trochomorphoidea. In addition to the nominate family ( Trochomorphidae ), the families Chronidae , Dyakiidae and Staffordiidae are included in this superfamily . Schileyko (2002) and, following him, the MolluscaBase divides the Kegelchen family into two subfamilies, Microcystinae Thiele, 1931 and Euconulinae Baker, 1928.
