Kehat (Bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Old Testament, Kehat is the second eldest son of Levi and ancestor of the Kehatites.

etymology

An explanation of the Hebrew name קְהָת Kehat can be found in the Aramaic Levi Document . There the name is associated with the word קָהָל qāhāl "assembly". This puts Kehat over the popular assembly, which includes an appointment with the priesthood. In the Septuagint the name is κααθ kaat .

Biblical report

Kehat

In several places Kehat is mentioned as Levi's second oldest son (e.g. Gen 46.11  EU and Ex 6.16  EU ). His brothers are called Gerschon and Merari , his sister Jochebed ( Num 26.59  EU ). According to Ex 6.18  EU , the sons of Kohath are Amram, Jizhar, Hebron and Usiël. According to Num 3:27  EU, Kehat is the progenitor of the Kehatites; the Amramites, the Jizharites, the Hebronites and the Usiëlites descend from his sons.

Kehatite

As Levites have on the Kohathites Service tabernacle to do. According to Num 4,4  EU , they are responsible for the most holy place in the tent of revelation. They are to carry all the implements of the sanctuary after they have been veiled by Aaron and his sons and sticks have been attached to them for carrying. These include for Num 4.5 to 14  EU the ark , the table with the show bread , and the containers for the libations , the candlestick and the altar with all equipment for the altar service. They are not allowed to touch the sacred objects directly, otherwise they will die. Therefore, YHWH orders Moses and Aaron to instruct the Kehatites one by one in their work in order to prevent them from having to die if they touch the sacred objects ( Num. 4:15, 18-20  EU ).

According to Num 4.36  EU , the number of male Kehatites is 2750. According to Num 7.9  EU , the Kehatites do not receive any share of the dedicatory offerings of the tribal leaders for the inauguration of the revelation tent for the fulfillment of their tasks because they are supposed to carry their burden on their shoulders.

In the land of Canaan , the Levites do not receive their own land. Instead, they are assigned cities to live in. The Kohathites received by Jos 21.20 to 26  EU four cities from the tribe of Ephraim (the cities of refuge Shechem, Gezer, Kibzajim, Beth Horon), four from the tribe of Dan (Eltekeh Gibbethon Aijalon Gathrimmon) and two from the tribe of Manasseh (Tanach, Gat-Rimmon). Aaron's descendants are listed separately in Jos 21,10–19  EU . You will receive nine cities from the tribes of Judah and Simeon (the asylum city of Hebron excluding the associated farmland, Libna, Jattir, Eschtemoa , Holon, Debir, Ayin, Jutta, Bet Shemesch ) and four from the tribe of Benjamin ( Gibeon , Geba, Anatot, Alemet) .
