Keiji Fukuda

Keiji Fukuda (* 1955 ) is an American doctor specializing in influenza research . In March 2009, Fukuda took up the position as deputy director general for health security and the environment ad interim at the World Health OrganizationTemplate: dead link /! ... nourl  ( page no longer available ) (WHO). He was the coordinator of the global influenza program from 2006 to 2008. He later became the director of that program. Before Fukuda started working at WHO, he worked as head of the Empidemiological Department, Influenza Division at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

biography

Fukuda's parents were medical professionals. His father emigrated from Japan and settled in Vermont . He came to the US on an anesthesia research fellowship and later worked at the Barre, Vermont hospital . Template: dead link /! ... nourl ( Page no longer available )

Keiji Fukuda graduated from Oberlin College . He completed his studies with a BA . During his studies he traveled as a backpacker through Asia, the Middle East and Europe for nine months . He then went on to study medicine at the University of Vermont Medical School . He successfully completed this in 1983. Fukuda graduated from the University of California, San Francisco , with a major in internal medicine . He also earned a Masters of Public Health majoring in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley . After completing his specialist training, Fukuda worked in clinics for leprosy and tuberculosis .

Fukuda trained at the CDC in Atlanta as part of the Epidemiology Intelligence Service (EIS) program. After completing the two-year training, Fukuda worked in the Viral Rash and Herpes Viruses department . This group was responsible for the study of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in order to investigate a possible link between the disease and chronic infection with Epstein-Barr virus and other viruses. In 1996 Fukuda switched to the influenza department. There he was responsible for the nationwide surveillance of influenza. During his stay in Georgia he worked as a clinical assistant professor at the medical faculty, community and preventive medicine department, at Emory University . Fukuda is also a member of the US Public Health Service, Commissioned Corps.

Fukuda has led investigations into dengue outbreaks , various types of bird flu outbreaks and SARS while at the CDC . He is the author of many specialist publications. He also works as a consultant for health issues and preventive medicine.

Fukuda lives in Geneva in 2009 with his wife Holly and two daughters .
