The Keilir (378 m) is a volcanic mountain in southwest Iceland on the Reykjanes peninsula .

Surname

The name means the cone in German .

location

The extinct volcano is located on the Reykjanes peninsula about halfway between Hafnarfjörður and Keflavík . It is located north of the fairly closed mountain range on the south side of the peninsula and stands out so clearly from this due to its advanced position and from the surrounding flat shield volcanoes and lava fields due to its height that it can almost be considered a landmark of the peninsula. You can see it from afar, even on the south coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the other side of Faxaflói Bay on a nice day .

Volcanism

It is a palagonite cone that was created by one or more eruptions at the same eruption site under an ice age glacier. Parts of the mountain also consist of pillow lavas .

The volcano belongs to the still active volcanic system of Trölladyngja , which is also called the Krýsuvík volcanic system .

Historical description

When Ina von Grumbkow wanted to research her fiancé, who had disappeared in Lake Öskjuvatn, in 1908 and therefore came to Iceland, she went up and down. a. on the Keilir and made drawings of the mountain. Later the ascent formed a chapter in her book Isafold .

Hiking on the mountain

There is a turn-off from the road to Keflavík marked with Keilir, and you can park your car at Höskuldarvellir . You go south towards the long ridge of Oddafell and then turn west.
