Keith U. Ingold

Keith Usherwood Ingold (born May 31, 1929 in Leeds ) is a British - Canadian chemist . He is known for research into free radical chemistry .

Life

Keith Usherwood Ingold is the son of British chemist Christopher K. Ingold and chemist Dr. Hilda Usherwood. He studied at the University of London with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1949 and at Oxford University , where he received his doctorate in 1951 under Cyril Hinshelwood . He then went to Canada, where he worked for the National Research Council (NRC) and was a post-doctoral student at the University of British Columbia . He then worked again for the NRC, where he headed the Free Radical Chemistry Department. He is a Distinguished Scientist at the Steacie Institute of Molecular Science.

He later looked at antioxidants like vitamin E , which scavenge free radicals, their role in aging and cancer. His research also had applications in the petroleum industry.

He has published over 550 scientific papers.

Honors and memberships

He is Officer of the Order of Canada (1995), Fellow of the Royal Society , the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

Ingold has nine honorary doctorates (Guelph, Mount Allison, St. Andrews, Carleton, McMaster, Dalhousie).
