Kekkaishi ( Japanese 結 界 師 ) is a manga series by the Japanese illustrator Yellow Tanabe , which was published in the manga magazine Shōnen Sunday from 2003 to 2011 . The manga was awarded the Shōgakukan Manga Prize 2006 in the Shōnen category. The series was also known as anime - television series and three video games for Nintendo DS and Wii implemented.

The work is about Yoshimori Sumimura, the heir of an old family that protects a magical power from demons, so-called Ayakashi. The manga can be categorized into the genres of Shons , Comedy , Action and Adventure .

content

Long ago, demons, the ayakashi, attacked a prince in order to steal his magical powers and rule the world. But the monk Tokimori Hazama stopped the demons. After the prince died, he sealed his power in Karasumori. His two students now made sure that the Ayakashi did not seize power. They used their magical arts, "Kekkai", in the fight against the demons. The Kekkai are magical protective shields with which the demons and spirits can be caught and destroyed. Five hundred years later, the descendants of the two students still protect Karasumori as Kekkaishi. The two families Yukimura and Sumimura descend from them, but they are now fighting over the title of the monk's legitimate successor.

The 14-year-old Yoshimori Sumimura ( 墨 村 良 守 ), heir of the Sumimura, has very strong kekkai, but can only handle them poorly. Although he didn't really want to be a Kekkaishi, he developed a strong protective instinct, especially against Tokine, after experiences with Ayakashi in his childhood. He is supported in the hunt of demons by the demon dog Madarao ( 斑 尾 ), who can track down the Ayakashi. This is already over 500 years old.

Tokine Yukimura ( 雪村 時 音 ) is the heiress of the other Kekkaishi family and is far superior to Yoshimori in skill and knowledge. However, their kekkai are very weak compared to yoshimoris. Her companion is the 400-year-old demon dog Hakubi ( 白 尾 ).

Manga

Yellow Tanabe invented the "Kekkai" art as a martial art for history. The name Kekkai is older for shields or ban circles. The series was published in the manga magazine Shōnen Sunday from Shogakukan . It started in issue 47/2003 and ended in issue 19/2011, which appeared on April 6, 2011. The chapters have also been published in 35 tankōbon (anthologies) that were published between February 18, 2004 and February 18, 2011.

Viz Media publishes the manga in English in North America, and the series appears in the Indonesian magazine Shonen Star . The work has also been translated into French and Italian . The manga was published in German by Carlsen Comics from December 2007 . In January 2013, the publication was canceled with the 20th volume.

reception

The manga was a commercial success in Japan. The last volume sold over 170,000 times in the first two weeks after its release. With almost 1.3 million sales, the series was number 34 of the best-selling manga of 2011. In 2007, Yellow Tanabe received the 52nd Shogakukan Manga Prize for Kekkaishi .

The German magazine Animania calls Kekkaishi a "fast-paced fantasy-action manga" which, with the feud between the two "strange" families, also has a lot to offer in terms of comedy. Since the main focus is on fun action, the demon hunt is rather bloodless but still dynamic. There is also some romance from the relationship between Yoshimori and Tokine, which reminds me of Romeo and Juliet but is not so tragic. The drawing style is kept simple, the faces rounded, and exudes a classic charm.
