The Kelvinside Academy is a private school in the Kelvinside district of the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow .

history

The school was founded in 1878 and opened on September 2nd of the same year. The designs for the building were provided by the Scottish architects James Sellars and Campbell Douglas . In 1957 a new building was added to the school. In 1966 the original school building was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A.

School operation

School operations are divided into three levels. The preschool is open to three to five year olds. It is located on the Balgray Campus at Westend. The subsequent elementary school comprises six grades as well as a one-year transition level to the secondary school, with which it shares a campus. The focus is on training in art, music, languages, information technology and sports. The senior school covers the grade levels up to university entrance qualification.

The Kelvinside Academy is located in the northwest of Glasgow not far from the botanical gardens and the Kelvin . The two-story building is designed in the style of Greek classicism . The work shows parallels to the buildings of Alexander Thomson . The south-west facing front facade is 23 axes wide, which are arranged in the scheme 3–7–3–7–3. The corner projections as well as the three-story central projection , which is designed in the style of Greek temples, are striking . The portico has four Ionic columns and closes with a triangular gable with acroterion . An ornamented frieze runs above the entrance portal . Pilasters structure the facade on the first floor vertically. The final roofs are covered with slate. On the left is a five-axis extension and on the right an eight-axis extension of more recent date.
