St. George's Church in Kemperi

Kemperi ( Georgian ქემფერი [ kʰɛmpʰɛrɪ ]) is a Georgian village in the Inner Kartlien region , in the municipality of Chaschuri .

Kemperi is located on the eastern slope of the Lichi Gorge, 11.5 kilometers from Chaschuri . The village has 350 inhabitants (2014).

history

In the historical Georgian documents, the place Kemperi was mentioned only in 1715. According to this document, Kemperi is already a settlement with 11 families. The names of these families are also mentioned. The village also exists with the name Kemerti on the map of the well-known Georgian scientist and cartographer Wachuschti Batonishvili (1696–1757). In the 18th century, after the Lekianoba , the former village was destroyed and deserted.

Kemperi was settled again in the 19th century. In 1833 14 families, 68 men and 52 women lived here. In 1865 the village had 13 families and in 1886 this number rose to 55 (293 inhabitants).

St. George's Church

St. George's Church ( Georgian ქემფერის წმინდა გიორგის ეკლესია ), which was built in 1880, is located in the village of Kemperi . The church is a basilica and has a rectangular floor plan (7.7 × 5.2 m) and is built from the hewn square stone. The building has two entrance gates on the south and west sides. The interior is plastered white. The building is covered with the roof tiles. Before this church was built, an older and smaller St. George's Church stood in its place.

Zweriana's Saqdari

Around 400 meters southeast of the Narwani district of the village of Kemperi there is still a church called Zwerianis Saqdari ( German : "a small church from Zweriani"). It comes from the late Middle Ages. The church is practically completely destroyed, only part of the altar is present. The basilica was built of the hewn stone. On the apse wall is a small window and two niches .
