Ken Hyde

Ken Hyde (born June 1915 in St. Helen's; † June 2010 ) was an English table tennis player . He competed in six world championships before World War II and won two bronze medals in 1939.

Career

Ken Hyde has been called up 16 times for the English national team, the first time in 1932 for an international match against Ireland. From 1934 to 1939 he was nominated for all six world championships . He finished fifth with the English team in 1938 . In 1939 he won bronze both in doubles with Hyman Lurie and in the team competition. In 1937 he took first place in the English rankings. In 1948 he quit because of health problems.

Ken Hyde won against world class players like Victor Barna (1937), Bohumil Váňa and Miklós Szabados .

Private

Ken Hyde had two older brothers, Cecil and Eric. He often played successfully doubles with Eric. Ken studied at the University of Liverpool and earned a Bachelor of Chemistry ( B.SC ) here. In 1940 he married and then enlisted in the Royal Air Force , where he was stationed in Africa for three and a half years. He earned his living as a managing director and consultant in several companies where he worked worldwide. Most recently, Ken Hyde lived in Hertfordshire.
