Kenneth Kaushansky
Kenneth "Ken" Kaushansky (* 1953 in Montreal , Canada ) is a molecular biologist and hematologist and the dean of the medical faculty at Stony Brook University on Long Island in the US state of New York .

Kaushansky's family moved to the United States when he was two years old.
Kenneth Kaushansky earned both a BA and an MD from the University of California, Los Angeles , with a medical degree. He completed all of his specialist training at the University of Washington . Here he received his first professorship (assistant professor) in 1987 , he became an associate professor in 1991 and was given a full professorship for hematology in 1995 . In 2002 he moved to the University of California, San Diego as professor of internal medicine . Since 2010 he has been Professor of Hematology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook , Long Island .
In 2004/2005 Kaushansky was President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and in 2007/2008 of the American Society of Hematology . From 1998 to 2002 he was one of the editors of the journal Blood .
Kaushansky and co-workers succeeded in the first discovery, cloning, characterization and therapeutic application of the long-sought growth factor of thrombocytopoiesis , thrombopoietin . In addition to the various physiological effects of thrombopoietin or pathophysiological phenomena in disorders of thrombopoietin or its receptor, he deals with chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia . Kaushansky is considered an outstanding physician and clinical teacher.
