Kenneth Sutherland, 4th Earl of Sutherland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kenneth Sutherland, 4th Earl of Sutherland († July 19, 1333 near Berwick ) was a Scottish magnate .

Kenneth Sutherland came from the Scottish aristocratic Sutherland family , who had owned the Sutherland rule since 1196 . He was a younger son of William Sutherland, 2nd Earl of Sutherland . After the death of his father between April 1306 and September 1307, his older brother William became heir of the estates and the title of her father, who at that time was still a minor. His brother died before December 1330, apparently unmarried and childless, which is why Kenneth became his heir. On December 7, 1330 he was raised to Earl of Sutherland . Sutherland allied with Reginald Moray from Culbin and his family. He renounced all claims to the Moray family's possessions in Sutherland, and the alliance was formally formed through the marriage of Gilbert Moray , a son of Reginald, to Kenneth's daughter Eustachia . When after the death of the Earl of Moray , the Guardian of Scotland in 1332, the so-called disinherited invaded Scotland and claimed the throne for Edward Balliol , Sutherland supported the claim to the throne of David II. In the following Second Scottish War of Independence , he fell at the Battle of Halidon Hill .

Kenneth Sutherland had Mary , a daughter of Donald, 6th Earl of Mar married. He had several children with her, including:

His son William became his heir.
