William Sutherland, 3rd Earl of Sutherland (* around 1286, † before December 1330 ) was a Scottish magnate .

Life

William Sutherland came from the Scottish aristocratic family Sutherland , who had owned the north Scottish rule of Sutherland since 1196 . He was the eldest son of William Sutherland, 2nd Earl of Sutherland , but was still a minor when his father died between April 1306 and September 1307. As Chief of Clan Sutherland , William was initially under the tutelage of Sir John Ross , a younger son of Uilleam, 3rd Earl of Ross , with whose family he was related by marriage through the wife of his uncle Walter of Duffus († 1263). The Earl of Ross, like Sutherland's father, rejected the elevation of Robert Bruce to King of Scots, but had to surrender to Bruce in the autumn of 1308. In the wake of his guardian's father, the young William Sutherland also changed sides and in March 1309 he participated in the first parliament of Robert Bruce in St Andrews . His guardianship also ended there when he was elevated to Earl of Sutherland on March 16, 1309 . Thereafter he remained a loyal supporter of the king, although little is known about his activities. He took part in the parliament in 1320, in which the Declaration of Arbroath to Pope John XXII. was decided.

He died before December 1330. Apparently he had remained unmarried, which is why his younger brother Kenneth became his heir.
