The Nechako Reservoir , sometimes also called Ootsa Lake Reservoir , is a reservoir in the Canadian province of British Columbia .
It was created in 1952 after the completion of the Kenney Dam and the damming of the Nechako River . Several natural lakes were flooded. The dam is located at the eastern end of the lake. To the west, the reservoir splits into two main arms. The northern arm of the reservoir includes the former lakes Ootsa Lake , Whitesail Lake , Whitesail Reach , while the southern arm includes the following lakes: Eutsuk Lake , Natalkuz Lake , Chedakuz Arm , Knewstubb Lake , Tetachuck Lake . The mountain range of the Quanchus Range extends from west to east between these two arms .
About 3/4 of the water volume is diverted through a 16 km long tunnel under the mountain range of the Kitimat Ranges , part of the Coast Mountains , through to Kitimat directly to the Pacific Ocean . The slope of around 850 m is used by a hydropower plant, which has an output of 790 MW. This energy is used by the aluminum plant operated by Alcan there . The remainder of the water flows east over the Cheslatta River and reaches the Nechako River 9 km below the Kenney Dam.
Tweedsmuir North Provincial Park and Protected Area and Entiako Provincial Park are two protected areas that border the reservoir.
