Kenya Uganda Tanganyika (abbreviation: KUT) is the name of the postage stamps issued by the East African Postal and Telecommunications Administration between 1935 and 1961 for the British colonies of Kenya , Uganda and Tanganyika .

prehistory

The British Protectorate of British East Africa initially issued its own postage stamps from 1890 to 1903. Just like the British Protectorate of Uganda from 1894 to 1903 (which developed from the Kingdom of Buganda ).

In the period from April 1, 1903 to July 22, 1920, both were then combined as East Africa and Uganda Protectorates .

In 1920 British East Africa (with the exception of a very small stretch of coast) was converted into the crown colony of Kenya. From then on the stamps were marked with Kenya and Uganda .

Although Tanganyika had been a British mandate since 1919 , the first stamps with the inscription Kenya Uganda Tanganyika came into circulation only in 1935 for the silver wedding of King George V.

The KUT are thus the successors to the stamps with the inscription East Africa and Uganda (1903–1920) and Kenya and Uganda (1920–1935).

course

The inscription Kenya Uganda Tanganyika was retained until the independence of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika (1961). Although the three states issued their own postage stamps, the East African Common Services Organization for the 1964 Summer Olympics put in circulation stamps that read Kenya Uganda Tanganyika Zanzibar . Zanzibar was written on the stamps, but they were never issued there.

When Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania , stamps with the inscription Kenya Tanzania Uganda appeared . These stamps were published in parallel with the editions of the independent states. This only ended in early 1976.
