The Indian nuclear power plant Narora (also called Narora Atomic Power Station - NAPS) is located approx. 200 km from the capital Lucknow of the state of Uttar Pradesh in the Bulandshahr district . It has two heavy water moderated pressurized water reactors (PHWR) with an output of 220 megawatts . Narora-1 entered commercial service on January 1, 1991, and Narora-2 on July 1, 1992.
On June 2, 2000, NAPS received the Golden Peacock Award for Environmental Leadership by the World Environment Foundation (WEM), a prestigious honor in India.
In September 2005, the government decided to allocate $ 53 million to modernize the cooling system. This is intended to extend the term by 25 years.
Accidents
On May 31, 1993, there was a serious fire in the turbine system of Narora-1; intensified by the melting of the reactor cabling, it almost came to a core meltdown . This was prevented when workers manually poured boron into the core to stop the chain reaction. The workers were exposed to considerable radiation. The accident was classified as level 3 (serious incident) on the INES of the international atomic energy organization .
Data of the reactor blocks
