The Tarapur Atomic Power Station ( English Tarapur Atomic Power Station , TAPS ) is located in the Indian state of Maharashtra in District Thane . The TAPS-1 and TAPS-2 reactors were supplied turnkey by General Electric (GE). These are boiling water reactors with an output of 160 MW each. At the time, they were almost the first nuclear reactors in Asia (the first was the JPDR , but it only had 13 MW). The reactors are the only ones delivered by GE to India , as the US ended cooperation because of the Indian nuclear weapons program and did not resume until 2006.

On May 9, 1983, the daily newspaper The Times of India reported that the Tarapur nuclear power plant was heavily radioactive and could hardly be operated. The employees of the prestige object would be exposed to the ionizing radiation far above the officially and internationally approved guide values.

The first two Indian 500 MW PHWRs ( heavy water pressure reactors ) are also located in Tarapur  ; in them heavy water is used as a moderator . TAPS-4 went critical on March 6, 2005 . TAPS-3 was connected to the network on June 15, 2006. Since August 18, 2006, TAPS-3 has also been supplying electricity to the grid. The costs for the two reactors are said to be 6.5 billion rupees .

The Tarapur boiling water reactor works with low enriched uranium (LEU), which was originally supposed to come from the USA. Because of the Indian nuclear weapons program and the refusal of the Indian government at the time to allow IAEA inspections, the contract was terminated by the USA in 1979. This is a requirement of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act of 1978, which prohibits the supply of nuclear material to states that do not allow inspections by the IAEA. It was then arranged that the French would deliver the LEU. They did that from 1983 to 1993 until deliveries were stopped for the same reason. From 1995 China delivered, and from 2001 Russia.

Other plants

In addition to the generators, PREFRE (Fuel Reprocessing Plant) and Advanced Fuel Fabrication Facility (AFFF) for the production of MOX fuel elements as well as fuel elements for light water reactors (LWR) and heavy water reactors (PHWR) can be found on the site since 1982 .

Since 1990 there has been a Waste Immobilization Plant (WIP), in which the nuclear waste is vitrified , and a repository (Solid Storage Surveillance Facility), which is to receive the waste from Tarapur and Trombai by 2010 .
