The nuclear power plant Kakrapar (also Kakrapar Atomic Power Station - KAPS called) is located near the city of Surat in the state of Gujarat . It consists of two 220 megawatt (MW) pressurized water reactors with heavy water as moderator (Pressurized heavy water reactor, PHWR). KAPS-1 went critical on September 3, 1992 and began commercial power production on May 6, 1993. KAPS-2 went critical on January 8, 1995 and began commercial power production in September 1995. In January 2003, the CANDU Owners Group signed (COG) KAPS-1 as the world's best PHWR in its class. The construction costs were originally estimated at 3.8252 billion rupees, but the facility is said to have cost 13.35 billion rupees in the end.

In addition to the reactor, a plant for the treatment of heavy water will also be located on the site (Kakrapar Heavy Water Upgrade Plant).

In January 2010, construction work began on Units 3 and 4, each with 700 MW. The units should be completed in 2015 and 2016, but no corresponding news as of June 2016.

Accidents

  • In 1998, KAPS-1 was shut down for 66 days due to a leak in the cooling circuit.
  • On March 10, 2004, the power supply for the control rods was irreparably damaged during maintenance work. As a result, the Automatic Liquid Poison Addition System became unusable due to an operator error . The accident was rated as a level 2 incident on the INES scale.
  • On March 11, 2016, a loss of coolant accident occurred in KAPS-1 when one of the lines in the primary cooling circuit of the 306 pressure pipes burst. The accident was previously classified as INES 1.

On August 22, 2006, villagers reported that two armed men had entered the power station's premises. A search by the police revealed no evidence that the people were still on the premises.
