history

On June 9, 2008, Kernkraftwerk Niederamt AG , a project company of Atel Holding AG (today Alpiq Holding ), submitted a general license application to the Federal Office of Energy . The general license application is the first step in the licensing procedure for a new nuclear power plant. The application consists of six documents: the safety report, the environmental impact report, the report on safeguarding against external impacts, the proof of disposal, the concept for decommissioning and the report on coordination with the spatial planning. The general license is issued by the Federal Council .

After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard suspended the ongoing general license procedures for all new nuclear power plants on March 14, 2011.

With the resolution of the General Assembly on March 21, 2017, the Niederamt AG nuclear power plant was dissolved and is now in liquidation. On January 1, 2018, an addition (Article 12a) to the Nuclear Energy Act came into force, which prohibits the issuing of general licenses for nuclear power plants.

Project information

The general license application entered was not based on a specific annex. A generic nuclear power plant was assumed, which covers the third-generation nuclear power plants available today with light water reactors (pressurized or boiling water reactors), without already defining a type and manufacturer. The application was based on two power classes, 1100 megawatts and 1600 megawatts.
