The Kerntal is a nearly six-kilometer-long and deep about 15 meters terrain incision at the border of the district of Bad Tolz-Wolfratshausen for Miesbach .

The dry valley extends from the Teufelsgraben in the south to the hamlet of Erlach near Steingau , about two kilometers west of Otterfing . West of the valley rises a moraine hill with the village of Jasberg .

Like the Teufelstal, the Kerntal was created by meltwater from the Isar-Loisach Glacier at the end of the Würme Ice Age .

On the land survey map of the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1877, the valley is referred to as Kern Thal . The Kernthalerstraße in the Otterfinger district of Palnkam and the Dietramszell hamlet of Thalham point today to the Kerntal.

The northern 1500 meters are used for agriculture today, the rest of the valley is forested.
