Life

Mathews grew up with his mother in Janesville ( Wisconsin on), where he attended high school. He then graduated from college in Beloit (WI), where he completed his training.

Before starting as an actor, he briefly taught at a high school in Lake Geneva (WI).

In 1954, Columbia Pictures signed him and made the six-foot-tall, stately man a sought-after Hollywood actor, at least for a short time, who made his breakthrough in Sindbad's seventh trip in 1958 . Two years later, in 1960, Mathews was in front of the camera in Lord of the Three Worlds , his most famous fantasy film.

But the success was short-lived. As early as the mid-1960s, Mathews was increasingly seen in B-movies and low-budget productions. In 1978, after producing the horror flick Nightmare in Blood , Mathews retired from acting.

For the last few years of his life, Mathews lived in San Francisco; at times he earned his living as an antique dealer .

He died of natural causes in July 2007 at the age of 81.

While Mathews mostly played men in his 30+ film roles with women at their feet and he often shot intimate scenes with women, Mathews was actually homosexual and lived in a gay community for 46 years.
